Recently, Sheanon Williams was added to the USA Men’s U-23 national roster, along with teammates Freddy Adu and Amobi Okugo. This team will be playing in the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament. Unfortunately, they will all be missing the Union’s next game against the Chicago Fire and could also miss the contest against Vancouver. However, all of these players will get important playing time with USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
Williams has been a starter and key component to the Union’s back line. He is a quick, fast player who not only makes great defensive stops but makes good runs up the field. Peter Nowak has used all of Williams’ talents to the best of the team’s ability. On throw-ins down the field, William’s forces teams to defend them like set-pieces because of his arm strength. He is a great, dynamic player who should have a place on the squad for years to come.
Next, Amobi Okugo, a starting midfielder, has also found his place on the USA squad. He is a fast, alert player who is good in the transition game between the defenders and strikers. It will benefit him, as the time playing with Klinsmann should help him develop. Okugo should have more opportunities to play for the US team in the future, especially in friendly matches.
Finally, Freddy Adu. Adu, who a few years ago was thought of as one of the top USA prospects, has settled down but was voted captain of the squad by his teammates. Ever since the Union acquired him mid-season last year, Peter Nowak has been searching for his place in the lineup. It has been tough on Adu because he has been constantly asked to switch roles between midfield and striker. Also, with numerous personnel changes, Adu still isn’t sure where he will be playing on the field or what his role will be with new striker Leoinard Pajoy and the talented Danny Mwanga off the bench.
Recently Jurgen Klinsmann tweeted about Adu:
“Congratulations to @FreddyAdu for being named by his teammates captain of the U-23 #USMNT”
On March 22, the National team played their first game against Cuba. USA blew them out in a 6-0 romp, in which Freddy Adu scored the 5th goal for his side.
