Flyers Fall, Fail to Avenge Winter Classic Loss

NEW YORK — Ouch. Could this Sunday be any better for a red, white, and blue New York team. For a Philly fan, today was a living hell.  Some watched as the Flyers fell to the Rangers in a Winter Classic rematch, or some remembered the Eagles’ season and how close they were to clinching a playoff berth. But, this is the life of sports; there are the ups and the downs.

The Rangers made themselves at home skating around in their creamy Winter Classic jerseys.  It seemed as though it was a tactic, used to make the Flyers remember January 2nd.  But the orange and black looked on.  Like most match-ups between the two teams,  the game started off slow.  Suddenly, about a minute into the game, Artem Anisimov broke his 17-game pointless streak.  The first period ended with Flyers lacking any sort of offense.

After a Flyer’s penalty kill, Max Talbot fed a perfect pass to Brayden Schenn as he exited the penalty box. He tied it at one with the breakaway goal 12:02 into the second.  He seems to be the only Flyer that can get a one on one shot past Lundqvist.  With five seconds left in the period, Marian Gaborik skated around the net and trickled a shot off of Ilya Bryzgalov’s stick to break the stalemate.

Michael Del Zotto #4 celebrates his third period goal with Artem Anisimov #42

However, the Flyers would not let up.  Less than a minute into the third period Wayne Simmond’s scored on a power play to tie the score.  36 seconds later, Michael Del Zotto scored to put his team back on top.  The period would end with two more goals from the Rangers (Brandon Dubinsky, and Ruslan Fedotenko).  As time expired MSG echoed with Rangers fans shouting, “You can’t beat us.” There is no love between the cities or players, especially with the 72 penalty minutes served.

With the win, the Rangers are now 16-4-1 in their last 21 games. They sit atop the National Hockey League standings because of their physical play, penalty killing and goaltending.  The question is, who will win next Saturday. Stay tuned…
