Flyers Acquire Nicklas Grossman

Before last night’s pounding of the Buffalo Sabres, the Philadelphia Flyers acquired defenseman Nicklas Grossman from the Dallas Stars in exchange for two draft picks (2nd round – 2012 & 3rd round – 2013).

Most fans don’t really know who Grossman is. If you didn’t know who he was, you probably did look him up on Google.

Grossman's toughness is commendable, and his shot-blocking ability could be important.

Well, Nicklas Grossman is 27-year old Swedish native. He has played in 52 games for the Stars this season and has 0 goals and 5 assists. The 27 year old Defenseman is a 6’3″, 227 one-man wrecking crew. He is known for his toughness, power, and ability to influence shots by the opponent.

He now enters a defensive unit that includes Assistant Captain Kimmo Timonen, long time Flyers Braydon Coburn and Matt Carle, and young stars Andrej Meszaros and Erik Gustafsson. His shot-blocking ability will go a long way to keeping pucks away from shaky goaltenders Sergei Bobrovsky and Ilya Bryzgalov, coupled with that of the shot-blocking legend himself, Timonen.

The Flyers having traded for him means that they have gotten the big defenseman that they need, but not many people have heard of him before. Will this solve the Flyers defensive problems? Who knows, but considering Paul Holmgren’s track record, he has pulled off yet another huge deals for this team. The 7-2 win over Buffalo was a good way to rebound from tough losses, and hopefully Grossman will only help the Flyers as they chase the Rangers!
