Georgetown Routs ‘Nova

This afternoon, the Villanova Wildcats (11-17, 4-12 BE) faced a tough opponent in the form of the 9th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas at the Verizon Center in D.C. ‘Cats freshman Jayvaughn Pinkston was out with an ankle injury that occurred during warm-ups about an hour before the game. In addition to the loss of Pinkston, star PG Maalik Wayns was not 100% due to a lingering knee injury.

Cheek was a big reason why this game wasn't over at the half (BH).

From the start of the game, nothing was going the Wildcats’ way. Within the first minute, junior center Maurice Sutton committed a flagrant foul on Georgetown forward Otto Porter. This incident sparked Georgetown to go up 17 in the first half. Behind a couple of Dominic Cheek threes and a hustle play by Mouphtaou Yarou, ‘Nova cut the lead to 7 at halftime, keeping things interesting for the final frame.

Alas, it was all Georgetown in the second half. Powered by 42 bench points and 4 players in double figures, Georgetown won by an impressive margin, 67-46.

Junior ‘Nova guard Dominic Cheek led all scorers in the game with 19 points. In his first game back, Maalik Wayns had only 3 points and shot 1 – 10 from the field. Jason Clark and Otto Porter led scoring for the Hoyas, each contributing 15 points.

With only 2 games left for Villanova, they look to gain some momentum heading into the Big East Tournament. Catch their next game on the road against Rutgers; it is March 1st at 9 PM.
