Shark Bite: Flyers Fall 1-0

San Jose, California —  Antti Niemi was the reason for a San Jose Sharks victory on Tuesday night. The Sharks beat the visiting Flyers, 1-0.

The San Jose Sharks celebrate a win at home against the Flyers (ESPN).

The San Jose Sharks were short All-Star forward Logan Couture, who suffered a lower body injury in their previous game, but that did not effect San Jose in any way, as they got off to a quick start. Left Winger Ryan Clowe scored 1:22 into the game; it would be the only goal. Neimi saved 26 shots to prevent any Philly scoring. He won the game for the Sharks. But, it was a good game for both goalies. In fact, Bryzgalov seems to continue to improve in net every game, despite coming out of a tough February. He had 22 saves, including some spectacular ones that kept the Flyers within one.It was a key win for the The Sharks who went 2-6-1 on a previous road trip. The struggle on the road knocked them out of first in the Pacific Division. But, they do not seem to struggle against the Flyers, winning their ninth over Philadelphia.

Bryzgalov blocks a shot. He continues to improve since an awful February (ESPN).

What was most disappointing about yesterday’s loss was the inability to put pucks in the net. The Flyers did not generate offense, going 0 for 2 on the power play, having a large amount of their shots blocked, and getting 16 shots on goal in the final two periods.

In the third period Danny Briere left when he was pushed into the boards by Marc-Edouard Vlasic. He hit head first, but no penalty was called. Briere did return. Opportunity came at the end of the game, when the Flyers began to put pucks on the net. Scott Hartnell came the closest, but his shot was denied by Neimi.

Unfortunately, Philadelphia (34-21-7) remains 11 points behind the New York Rangers in the Atlantic Division. The loss also marks the end to the Flyers road trip where they went 2-2. The Flyers came up with some big wins, but they really need a spark. They just need to find what that spark is.
