Elton Brand, Late Threes Help Sixers Beat Hawks

On Saturday, the Sixers (29-23) were looking for a win, not even a pretty one, after colossal beatdown suffered against the Wizards the night before. They got exactly what they wanted against the Hawks, in a 95-90 dogfight.

The first quarter saw poor shooting from the Sixers and good shooting from the Hawks, who were trading hoops with the Sixers for most of the quarter. 8 points from Elton Brand kept the game kept the game close, until a 10-0 ATL run saw them up 6, 23-17, at the period’s end.

Early in the 2nd, the Hawks went up 9 on a Kirk Hinrich jumper, but that 9-point lead quickly became 7 on an Iguodala answer. Later on, 2 Elton Brand free throws and a Jodie Meeks 3-ball brought the Sixers within 3, leading to an Atlanta timeout. After this, the Sixers and Hawks resumed their back-and-forth game of trading baskets.

After the Hawks grabbed a small, 4-point edge with only 2:33 left, Brand and Jrue Holiday hit consecutive jumpers to tie the game at 41. An Andre Iguodala signature fade away caught all net and gave the Sixers a 2-point lead with 1:30 to play before the half, 43-41. It would remain that way at the buzzer.

The Sixers jumped out to an early 4-point lead on an Evan Turner jump shot, but then the Hawks went on another big run to take the lead at 52-47. Again, the Hawks and 76ers began to trade buckets, and finally a Lou Williams layup tied the game at 59 with 3:32 left in the 3rd. A Joe Johnson three-pointer helped Atlanta take a 66-62 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a surprising Sixers come back. Instead of having a quarter full of chokes and throwing up bricks, the Sixers played extremely well. Brand had 13 of his team-high 25 points in the quarter. He assisted on 2 consecutive 3-pointers from Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala that were key to this victory.

Jodie Meeks also dropped a deep ball to help the Sixers claim a win. Brand made a huge base line fade away with a minute and a half left in the game to put the Sixers back up 4, after a Marvin Williams 3. Josh Smith made a pull up jumper to cut the deficit to 3 late in the game, but that was about it for the Hawks as the Sixers pull out a big comeback win.

The Sixers are 3-0 vs. the Hawks this year, winning by a total of 30 points. Andre Iguodala had a great game (18 points, 6-12 FG, 3-4 3Fg, 3-4 FT, 8 REB). Elton Brand showed his all star form with 25 points on 10-12 FG, 5-6 FT.

The Sixers are going to have to find a way to win in Miami on Tuesday, as the currently sit in the 7th seed and would have to face the Heat in a playoff series.
