Eagles QB Change: Nick Foles Reportedly Set to Replace Vick in Philadelphia

After yet another disappointing loss this Sunday, a 30-17 drubbing at the hands of the undefeated Atlanta Falcons, Andy Reid and the offensive coaching staff is reportedly set to make a change at QB. Rookie Nick Foles, the team’s preseason hero and 3rd-round pick, will likely replace the team’s $100-million man, Michael Vick, in the team’s Week 9 matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

It was first reported by NFL.com’s Michael Fabiano and then independently confirmed by Fox 29’s Howard Eskin.

While the latest loss wasn’t necessarily Vick’s fault, he has been a model of inconsistency since last season; in 7 games this season, he’s thrown for 1823 yards and 9 touchdowns, but he’s also thrown for 8 interceptions and fumbled the ball five times while completing only 59.0 percent of his passes. Foles, on the other hand, was 40-of-63 with 553 yards and 6 touchdowns in only 3 preseason outings, earning high praise from much of the NFL for his performance.

This news comes after Vick told reporters yesterday (via Washington Post) that he would “support” a QB change if Reid decided to make one; only Reid knows whether this directly influenced this decision, but whatever the reason, Foles will finally get his chance to prove himself.

Although it’s nice to see the rookie getting his chance, Vick wasn’t the problem against Atlanta. The defense under new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles gave up 30 points and over 420 yards of total offense to Matt Ryan and the Falcons, putting the offense in bad situations throughout. An upgrade at QB is always nice, and seeing Foles complete the important passes instead of throwing the ball into the ground would be a sight for sore eyes, but before the Eagles can take the next step and stop the bleeding, an improvement along the offensive and defensive lines is necessitated.

All that said, it’s time to celebrate, or perhaps lament, the end of a short but exciting era in Philadelphia: the Michael Vick era.
