Eagles Cut Defensive End Jason Babin

In another shocking move, the Philadelphia Eagles have cut two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin just one day after the defense gave up yet another fourth-quarter lead to the Carolina Panthers Monday night. Babin, 32, joins defensive coordinator Juan Castillo as the second defensive casualty in the Eagles’ 3-8 disastrous campaign.

Babin had 18 sacks just a season ago but was mostly ineffective this season, failing to generate pressure off the edge and playing the run badly. Even so, this move’s sudden nature makes one think there is more to the situation than meets the eye. Sal Paolantonio told Mike Missanelli that it was because of Babin’s “vocal nature” in the locker room; the veteran was known to call people out for mistakes they made and the struggles of the entire defense.

Head coach Andy Reid, in his post-cut press conference, remarked that the move was made to “give [the Eagles] an opportunity to give more playing time to the younger guys in the DL rotation” (via Les Bowen). You could see that in the second half of the Panthers game, with rookie Vinny Curry and third-year player Brandon Graham playing the majority of the snaps across from Trent Cole.

This move also makes one wonder whether defensive line coach Jim Washburn will stay; he came over to the Eagles along with Babin and implemented the wide-nine technique that Babin flourished in, at least for one year. No matter what, expect to see more changes as the season progresses and the team looks to distance itself from its worst year in two decades.

Agreed, but Trent Cole won’t take this lightly and it isn’t very good timing.

This move needed to happen, hopefully Reid and Washburn are gone too!
