Eagles Fire Defensive Line Coach Jim Washburn

According to several league sources, including CSNPhilly’s Reuben Frank, the Philadelphia Eagles have fired defensive line coach Jim Washburn. Washburn, who brought the wide-nine pass rush scheme to Philadelphia, has been coaching the team since 2011.

Many could’ve seen this coming after the release of Washburn’s protege, Jason Babin, last week. After leading the league in sacks last year, the Eagles defense has been unable to generate any sort of consistent pressure, allowing opposing quarterbacks to pick them apart.

League sources cite Washburn’s tirade after Babin’s release as the reason for his firing, but this comes after two years of him being difficult and disruptive. From last year’s confrontation with offensive line coach Howard Mudd to his refusal to work with the defensive coordinator, Washburn has been too much of a liability especially with the defensive line struggling. To put things in perspective, the Eagles were 11-17 with Jim Washburn on the staff.

Washburn will be replaced by Tommy Brasher, who was the Eagles defensive line coach from 1999-2005. He will now be working with a younger corps of ends, led by former first-round pick Brandon Graham and rookie second-rounder Vinny Curry.
