Relax, Eagles Fans, Andy Reid Won’t Return in 2013

After the Philadelphia Eagles (4-9) picked up their first win in 70 days against Tampa Bay, 23-21, the fanatic chants continued: “No, this means Andy Reid is coming back!”. “Reid’s coming back. I can just feel it”. People of the great city of Philadelphia, relax. Andrew Walter Reid will not be the Eagles’ head coach in 2013-2014.

Reid is on his way out (via RichKidBrands).

I mean, are people that afraid of change that they’re scared about separation from Big Red?

Does no one remember Jeffrey Lurie’s preseason comments? The Eagles’ maligned owner told dozens of assembled reporters the same thing: another 8-8 finish, a .500 record, would be unacceptable. Going back on those words, which he stated as a promise more than anything, would strip Lurie of any credibility he still has in the eyes of Eagles fans. Jersey sales are down, seats are empty, and fan enthusiasm is at an all-time low. Andy Reid’s poor game management skills, ridiculous post-game press conferences, and poor drafting have no place in this organization anymore.

There is one reasonable complaint, however, from pro-conspiracy theorists: If Andy Reid truly is going to be fired, he would’ve been gone by now. It’s a fair point, but you have to remember that Andy Reid and Jeffrey Lurie are close friends. To fire Reid in the middle of the season would be the ultimate insult to a coach who, in truth, has been a net positive for a franchise that was in the dumps 14 years ago. Lurie is set to let Reid go at the end of the season; the most likely scenario will involve Reid resigning at the end of the year “on his own terms”.

It isn’t even about what is the right move: it is about what is the realistic move. The Eagles organization is undergoing major changes, with new blood being brought in everywhere along the roster and the coaching staff. That process is going to be complete when Andy Reid is gone, an event that is unavoidable for Lurie in the near future.

Reid won’t return, but yet the Chargers’ front office will persevere with Norv Turner in 2013 . Go figure .

Look at what Jim Harbaugh has done at the 49ers! College coach all the way…they know the college talent, they can evaluate it well, they bring unique systems and they are great football minds.
