Unranked Temple Stuns No. 3 Syracuse: Recap and Analysis

The Temple Owls (9-2) walked into Madison Square Garden and stole the show from #3 Syracuse (10-1). Senior guard Khalif Wyatt had a career-high 33 points and was 8-17 from the field, leading the Owls to victory. Temple also received a huge contribution from sophomore forward Anthony Lee, who had 21 points and 9 rebounds and dominated fellow sophomore Rakeem Christmas throughout.

Temple had 36 attempts from the free throw line and made 29. Wyatt was 15-15 from the line while Lee was 11-for-14.

Syracuse also received some productivity from C.J. Fair, who totaled 25 points and 7 rebounds. Senior guard Brandon Triche also had 17 points and two steals for the Orange.

Temple was arguably outplayed by Syracuse but they still came out with the victory thanks to some clutch play late. Syracuse was more efficient from the field, shooting 44% while the Owls only shot 39%. Syracuse also out-rebounded the Owls by 1 and forced 14 Temple turnovers.

Game-Changers:

Temple’s three-point shooting was a definite game-changer and played an important role in their win against Syracuse. The team shot 8-24 from behind the arc. Although it is a low 33%, the amount they made is what is important. Syracuse made and attempted more shots giving Temple the feeling that they had to hit threes in order to win. 24 of their 83 points came from behind the arc, while Syracuse only hit 2 shots from the 3 point line.

Player of The Game: Khalif Wyatt (TEM)

Khalif Wyatt is the best scorer on the team, averaging 16.2 points per game. Wyatt went off for 33 and he was a solid 47% from the field. His ability to get into the lane and create contact stymied the Orange throughout and put key players (James Southerland, Triche) in foul trouble late in the game.

His performance gave Temple a big win that will definitely help them when it comes down to March. Syracuse could not have expected him to have this type of outbreak and they were not prepared. If Wyatt can keep scoring at this rate, Temple will be a dangerous team.
