Carl Jones Named Big 5 Player of the Week

St. Joseph’s Hawks (13-7, 4-3 A-10) senior guard, Carl Jones, has been putting on a show this past week in tough games. Jones has slowly returned to his true form after being hampered by a suspension and an injury throughout the year. The Hawks have played well without him, but his presence as a leader on the court is shown when he takes over games.

Jones plays against Temple (via College Chalk Talk).

The senior guard is averaging 15.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.

Carl can take over many games, as he did the other night against Temple, especially in crunch time. With the Hawks starting to become desperate, Jones showed why he can score with the best of them.  He calmly stepped up and hit back to back threes to help the Hawks get a big win over Big 5 and Atlantic 10 rival Temple.

Another aspect of Jones’ game that has started to come full circle is his defense. In both games this pas week, Xavier and Temple, he was assigned to shut down the threats on the opposing side. He showed improvement and limited the players to having to take tough contested shots.

Jones’ attitude on and off the court is what needs to change to make him great. He needs to become more of a team player, and more of a leader. This Hawks team is in desperate need of a leader as the come in on the home stretch of the A10 schedule.

The Hawks need his game to stay where it is now if they have any chance of making it to the NCAA Tournament. This team has the potential to make many opposing coaches made, they just need Jones to step up and show them how to do it.
