Although the Flyers couldn’t capture the win in the shootout, they did get 1 point. This was a much tighter-checking game than the previous with excellent goaltending. Lets look at the 3 stars of the night.
Honorable Mention: Sean Couturier
While Coots wasn’t on the score sheet, he was magical in OT, and very solid defensively as always. On his one shift in OT, he was magical in the offensive zone completely controlling the play. Hopefully he can build of that shift to help revitalize the Flyer’s struggling offense.
3rd Star: Mike Knuble
Well the 40 year-old showed why Paul Holmgrem signed him tonight. He assisted on Matt Read’s goal and was excellent defensively. One play that stands out in my mind is in the 2nd period where he came on the back-check to stop a breakaway. That is leadership right there and hopefully the younger plays can learn from a veteran play like that.
2nd Star: Jakub Voracek
Jakub Voracek continued to improve his play tonight, notching a power-play goal in the first period. Jake was very effective in the offensive zone especially on the powerplay. The part of Jake’s play that is most impressive to me is his ability to carry the puck through the neutral zone. Voracek utilizes his create speed and puck-handling to maneuver defenders.
1st Star: Matt Read
Reader was phenomenal tonight offensively, registering one goal and 3 shots. Matt also facilitated play very well contributing to the Flyers sustained offensive pressure. The Flyers however are going to need Matt (4 goals in 2 games vs. Panthers) to score against more teams than just the Panthers if they want to succeed.
