Philadelphia Phillies: Predicting the 2013 Opening Day Lineup

2012 was an ugly year for Phillies fans to say the least. Just to drive the knife further into the heart of all of you die-hards, here was the 2012 Opening Day starting lineup:

1. Shane Victorino CF
2. Placido Polanco 3B
3. Jimmy Rollins SS
4. Hunter Pence RF
5. Ty Wigginton 1B
6. John Mayberry Jr. LF
7. Carlos Ruiz C
8. Freddy Galvis 2B
9. Roy Halladay RHP

Notice anything odd? Maybe the fact that just one of those players had hit over 30 homeruns in a season. Not Hunter Pence. Not Ty Wigginton. Try Jimmy Rollins. He hit 30 homeruns in his 2007 MVP campaign. With that being said, in previous years the Phillies have always had at least two bats in the lineup that were capable of going for 30+. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard (you can throw Pat “The Bat” Burrell in there for pre-2008 seasons). Also, anytime that Ty Wigginton is in your Opening Day lineup, you know you’re in for it. Wiggy couldn’t field a ball to save his life last year.

But as we Phillies fans have learned over the years, out with the old and in with the new. 2012 is behind the team, they have their big bats back and healthy for the first time in two years. With the rise of “Babe”, Darin Ruf, the Phillies appear to have three guys who can now bang out 30+ homeruns. With the additions of Michael Young, a career .301 hitter, and Ben Revere, a career .278 hitter, the Phillies can certainly make noise offensively this season. With all of that being said, here is my prediction for the Phillies 2013 Opening Day Starting Lineup:

Some new names in the field for the Phils.

1. Jimmy Rollins SS
2. Ben Revere CF
3. Chase Utley 2B
4. Ryan Howard 1B
5. Michael Young 3B
6. Darin Ruf LF
7. Eric Kratz C
8. Delmon Young RF
9. Cole Hamels LHP

Now, that looks much better than 2012. With the entire lineup hitting around average, this can still be a powerful lineup. If Howard can come back this year and hit his traditional 35+ homeruns and 140 RBIs, Utley can hit 25 homeruns and drive in 90 runs, and Michael Young can hit .300 with 15+ homers and 80 RBIs, then I believe that the Phils can make some noise this year. Regardless of pitching, this lineup can do some damage and win some games, which it will have to because of the problems the guys throwing the ball had last year.

My prediction of Cole Hamels as the Opening Day starter may come as a shock for some people, and a no-brainer for others. By starting Hamels, the Phillies will be breaking a two-year trend of starting Roy Halladay on Opening Day. It’s time for Hamels to come back and reassert himself as the No. 1 for the Phils.

I would go Revere/M Young/Utley/Howard/Ruf/Rollins/Kratz/D Young. I know J-Roll really wants to hit leadoff, though.

I would love to have the lineup that you posted, but as long as Cholly is managing the team… J-Roll will be hitting leadoff
