Eagles Work Out QB Geno Smith, Jeffrey Lurie Observes

The Philadelphia Eagles have confirmed that the team worked out quarterback Geno Smith in Morgantown, West Virginia on Monday. Head Coach Chip Kelly, General Manager Howie Roseman and Owner Jeffrey Lurie were in attendence. Teams are known to work out players in the draft as doing their due dillegence. But when the owner is in attendence, it adds alot of speculation to what the Eagles agenda was with this.

Smith is the mobile QB Kelly likes.

There are a few possibilities as to why Jeffrey Lurie was in attendence, after being known as a “hands off” owner whom allows his front office personnel freedom with making player evaluations and decisions.

1. This is the first time since drafting Donovan Mcnabb 2nd overall in the 1999 draft, that the Philadelphia Eagles find themselves going into the NFL draft with the quarterback position as one of need.

2. After 14 years of allowing Andy Reid and Joe Banner running the show, it could be possible that Jeffrey Lurie wants to be more involved in how his team is being run. He is divorced and appears to have more free time on his hands.

3. The most realistic agenda behind his attendence, and this story leaking out, is that its a smoke screen for other teams who would be interested in drafting Geno Smith. Or teams who would like to trade up to the 4th overall pick in the draft, currently owned by the Eagles. The Eagles could really like Geno Smith, but the popular consensus is that he is not worth taking that high in the draft.

One example is the Buffalo Bills, who recently released QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and seem to have their eye on Smith. At No. 8, the Eagles could force them to trade up and get an extra early-round pick from them while still being able to draft the guy they want.

Philadelphia sports fan since 1992. I always say ive seen it all, but my hometown teams never seize to amaze. Not always in a good way. Favorite player on the Eagles is Jason Peters. I feel at his best, Peters is one of the best lineman in team history. Favorite Philadelphia sports moment : The Flyers erasing an 0-3 deficit against the Bruins in the 2010 playoffs.
