The Flyers have traded Matt Ford to the Columbus Blue Jackets for future considerations. Ford spent his tenure in the organization in the AHL, where he has spent the rest of his career so far. He was acquired February 2, 2012 for defenseman and prospect Kevin Marshall.
This trade frees up a roster spot and $600,000 in salary cap, which leaves room for a new player and a lot of speculation. It could be a sign that Holmgren is going after a defenseman that can help this team rebound. This trade could also be meaningless, and Holmgren wanted to get what he could out of Ford while he can.
It is just a waiting game from here on out to determine if this was a trade for a bigger trade, or it was Holmgren just opening spaces for when free agency rolls around.
