Philadelphia Flyers Offseason News and Notes: Bernstein, Briere, and The Draft

With many questions and concerns heading into this year’s offseason, the Philadelphia Flyers must face what they have to do to build for success in the future. Many rumors have already begun stirring around the  Flyers’ front office.

Phoenix D-Man Keith Yandle.

One of the most recent ones that i have heard is sending Flyers’ RW Matt Read to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for 24-year old goaltender Jonathan Bernier. I personally think that Bernier has a bright future, despite two pretty strong offensive years from Read. This trade would fill the backup goaltender role, and with a young goalie like Bernier, I would like this deal a lot if it ends up going down.

Another popular rumor that has been going around are the possible buyouts of G Ilya Bryzgalov and RW/C Danny Briere. Insiders like TSN’s Bob Mackenzie and Dennis Bernstein have tweeted about the rumors, so this could end up being true. If the Flyers end up buying Bryz out, it would make a lot more sense to go through with the Bernier trade.

Ive also heard trades that involved sending one of the Flyers’ young centers off, like Sean Couturier or Brayden Schenn. The Flyers’ biggest need is defense, and it has been rumored the Flyers are going after the Coyotes’ Keith Yandle, the Blues’ Alex Pietrangelo, and the Blues’ Kevin Shattenkirk.

The Flyers can also pickup a defenseman in the draft, and though I have heard that the Flyers might trade up in the draft, I find it very unlikely. ESPN hockey Insiders have done mock drafts, and almost all of them have said that the Flyers will draft a defenseman. Possible defensemen that the Flyers could draft are Rasmus Ristolainen (Finland) and Ryan Pulock (Canada). Others  are saying to draft a goalie, notably the top-ranked goalie prospect Zach Fucale (Halifax Mooseheads).
