Philadelphia Flyers Acquire Rights to D Mark Streit In Exchange for 2014 4th-Rounder

On Wednesday, June 12th at about 1PM, the Philadelphia Flyers made an announcement that they had acquired defenseman Mark Streit from the New York Islanders in exchange for a conditional 2014 4th-round pick.

Streit with the Islanders (via Blogspot).

For those of you who are not familiar with Mark Streit, he a defensive defenseman who brings size and strength, and can provide solid defense in the defensive zone, while providing offense in the offensive zone. Last year, Streit would have been 5th on the Flyers in scoring with 27 points in 48 games. Streit registered 6 goals and 21 assists last year in the shortened season. He also posted 5 points in 6 games in the 2013 playoffs vs. the Penguins in the 1st round.

I say that the Flyers got a solid defenseman for virtually nothing. Despite Streit’s age (35), I think he has a lot of game left in the tank. TSN’s Daren Dreger reports that Flyers’ GM Paul Holmgren and Streit’s Agent, Pat Brisson, are working on a deal starting today. Dreger reports that they are targeting a deal for 4 years (at approximately $5.5 million per year) which would put Streit in a Flyers’ uniform until his age 39 season.

For Flyers’ fans and for many people to decide whether this is a good trade or not all depends on the contract agreement between Streit’s agent and Holmgren.
