LA Kings, Flyers Talk Jonathan Bernier Trade

The Philadelphia Flyers have become the latest team to officially inquire about Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Bernier, who the Kings have on the trading block.

According to a Kings’ source, GM Dean Lombardi has basically been holding an “auction” to see what he can get for his young goalie. Bernier went 9-3-1 last year with an impressive 1.87 GAA.

The Flyers are reportedly ready to offer winger Matt Read, who recently turned 27 but will be a free agent next season. Read had 11 goals and 13 assists in the lockout-shortened 2012-2013 season. The Kings, however, will likely want more than that given the amount of teams interested; names that have been thrown out there are Flyers leading scorer Jake Voracek and defensive forward Sean Couturier (plus a pick).

In the midst of trying to buy out $5.6-million goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, the Flyers are looking for a suitable replacement. It’s either Steve Mason, who finished the 2013 season on a strong note, or a trade/free agent signing. Bernier will be a restricted free agent this summer if the Kings can’t trade him (which is unlikely), and Phoenix’s Mike Smith is the best unrestricted free agent at the position.

Trading Voracek or Couturier, however, would be foolish. If the Kings truly do want Voracek, it makes a lot of sense to stay with Mason rather than sacrificing the team’s offensive future.
