Chase Utley (Oblique) to Begin Rehab Today

He’s on his way back!

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, who has been taking live swings for the past week or so in preparation to return to live action, will report to the team’s AA affiliate, the Reading Fightin’ Phils, to continue his rehab from an oblique strain. He was placed on the Disabled List on May 23, retroactive to May 21. Today will be Utley’s first live game, when the Fightin’ Phils take on the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox affiliate).

Before the injury, Utley was hitting .272 AVG/.339 OBP/.475 SLG with seven home runs and 25 RBIs, near the front of the team in all hitting categories. Different players have stepped in his stead, including prospect Cesar Hernandez and utility infielders Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen.
