Philadelphia Eagles, Wideout Jeremy Maclin Begin Contract Negotiations

The Philadelphia Eagles have a lot of questions heading into training camp, especially who Chip Kelly will name the team’s starting quarterback, but one question they do not want to have is whether wide receiver Jeremy Maclin will be on the team past 2013 or not. Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote in a recent article that the Eagles and Maclin have begun preliminary negotiations on a contract extension.

Maclin played well with Nick Foles (#9), going for two late-season 100-yard games including the winning TD against Tampa (via DallasNews).

Maclin is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and is due for a huge pay raise: from a $930,000 base salary in 2012 to a $3.203 million salary in 2013. He hopes to make even more with a new deal.

Contract years have always been interesting for Eagles. One prime, relevant example is DeSean Jackson, who struggled mightily in his contract year (2011 – 58 receptions, the lowest of his career to that point) but still managed to bring in a nice, five-year deal worth $9.7 million per year.

Maclin has always been a consistent player for the Eagles, averaging between 850 and 950 yards pretty much every season. He has not, however, ever hit the 1000-yard mark or made the Pro Bowl, two things DeSean had done. Some of that can be attributed to shortcomings at the quarterback position, but also to Maclin’s individual inconsistency.

Of the nuances of a “contract” year, Maclin said, “I’m going to go out there and play ball. Obviously, this is the organization that drafted me. I don’t want to leave, but at the end of the day, that’s going to come up when it’s time for it. All I can do is play ball and play it to the best of my ability.”

If he does, there is no doubt that he will be here to stay, and here to stay with some financial security.

Maclin’s agent is Jim Steiner, whose other major NFL client is 49ers defensive end Justin Smith.
