Flyers Offseason Rumors: Evgeni Nabokov, Ray Emery, and More

Who will be bearing the Orange and Black sweater for the upcoming 2013-2014 season? The Philadelphia Flyers have many needs that must be addressed in this upcoming offseason. With many rumors swarming the franchise, the Philadelphia Flyers have a couple more to add to the longing list of possible outcomes.

With the compliance buyout announced on June 25th for goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, the Flyers have added another gap to fill that must be addressed in the upcoming offseason. TSN’s Darren Dreger has reported that the Flyers are interested in two unrestricated free agent goaltenders, one of them being Chicago Blackhawks’ stud Ray Emery. Emery, 30, was a Flyer during the 2009-2010 season. He played well in his first and only season with the Flyers, posting a 16-11-1 record with a 2.64 GAA and .905 save percentage. Emery, however, was injured during his stint with the Flyers.

This past season, Emery helped guide his team, along with goalie partner Corey Crawford, to the Stanley Cup Championship. Emery had a sterling record of 17-1-0 with a 1.94 GAA and a .922 save percentage. Not bad, huh? I think a Ray Emery signing will be good for the club. Emery did pretty well here in his only season here with the Flyers and I think that he and Steve Mason would run a tight goaltending tandem for the club.

Dreger’s second goalie that the Flyers had in mind is the New York Islanders’ Evgeni Nabokov. Nabokov, 37, helped lead the Islanders to the playoffs in the lockout-shortened season. Despite his youthful age of 37, Nabokov showed no signs of slowing down last season. Nabokov appeared in 42 of the 48 games for the Islanders, posting a 19-18-3 record. He also posted a GAA of 2.55 and a save percentage of .915. I think if the Flyers acquire Nabokov, it will only be a one- or two-year deal tops. Nabokov would help guide and teach the young Steve Mason, and would help him become that competitor that he was in his rookie season.

In addition to the Flyers in search for a goalie, unrestricted free agent forward Viktor Stalberg has gone under the Flyers radar according to the Inquirer’s Flyers beat writer Sam Carchidi. Stalberg, 27, would bring a very solid offensive game. Stalberg can go on a line with RW Jakub Voracek and C Claude Giroux, as he brings speed and also great hockey sense. Stalberg won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks while  posting 3 assists in 19 playoff games. During the regular season, Stalberg tallied 9 goals and 14 assists in the shortened season for 23 points in 47 regular season games.
