Philadelphia Flyers Sign Vincent Lecavalier

Darren Dreger read a text live on TSN Radio at 6:25 PM from a source, confirming to Dreger that the Philadelphia Flyers have won the Vincent Lecavalier sweepstakes.

The show, TSN Drive, had Dreger on talking hockey rumors and Dreger revealed that when he asked his Flyers source, “Did you guys get Lecavalier?”, the sources responded “Yes.” There is no word yet on the length and terms of the deal, and no other confirmation aside from Dreger and his source.

It had seemed that Lecavalier would sign with another team, but with Dallas, Montreal, and Detroit losing out earlier today the Flyers became a more real possibility, and if this report is true, it seems Holmgren won out.

Tim Panaccio is reporting that the deal is 5 years, $22.5 million. In that case, I’m ambivalent. There is no doubt that Lecavalier will have a positive impact on his linemates and improve the power play, but this deal could hamstring the Flyers near the end as Lecavalier, 33, starts to break down. Especially given the fact that there is a FULL no-move clause, according to Pierre LeBrun. Sarah Baicker of CSNPhilly points out:

ALL OF THAT SAID, you have to like the fact that the Flyers first two lines will be Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek and Simmonds-Lecavalier-Schenn. And it’s not that bad of cap hit. If the Flyers somehow package Coburn+a forward (Read/Coots) for a solid defenseman, I’ll love this move even more.

The former Lightning captain had 10 goals and 22 assists in last year’s shortened season.
