The Phillies’ farm system has gotten a big lift recently thanks to a young third baseman called Maikel Franco. Franco has been a stud in a lackluster Phillies minor league system, winning Minor League Player of the Month for June.
Maikel Franco, 20, was signed by the Phillies as a teenager in 2010. He has shined in his 4th professional season with the Single-A Blue Claws and Double-A Fightin’ Phils. In 12 games in Reading, Franco has batted .431 and recorded a whopping 1.207 OPS. His 101 hits, 20 homeruns, and 63 RBIs lead all Phillies minor leaguers. Franco is ranked the Phillies’ 10th best prospect according to MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo.
He does, however, have some competition as the Phillies’ future third baseman: Cody Asche, currently in Triple-A, although Asche’s numbers aren’t as flashy and there are rumors that he might try a move to second base or the outfield to make room for Franco.
If Maikel Franco can keep up his great play, he could play a major role in the Phillies’ aging infield sooner rather than later.
