According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre Lebrun, The Philadelphia flyers and superstar center Claude Giroux are close to a contract extension. The deal is rumored to be 8 years in length and “north” of $8 Million per year, most likely $8.3 Million/year (8 years, $66 million).
This deal locks in the Flyers #1 center position for the foreseeable future, something every Stanley Cup caliber team needs. While many are frightened about the AAV (average annual value), the salary cap has been rumored to go up to $80 million in the next 5 years. Also, Claude Giroux is the cornerstone of this team; it is essential to sign him before it is to late.
Here is a list of players with comparable AAV. (per Capgeek.com)
- Ryan Getzlaf ($8.25 Mil.)
- Corey Perry ($8.625 Mil.)
- Eric Staal ($8.25 Mil.)
Despite the two sides being close, with the goaltending rumors surrounding the team, Sam Carchidi is reporting that the Flyers and Giroux will not reach a deal by Thursday night.
