John McDonald was traded to the Red Sox just hours before the waiver trading deadline approached. In return, the Phillies acquired minor league relief pitcher Nefi Ogando.
McDonald only hit for a .174/.208/.304 line with one home run in only 23 at bats. He did provide some key defense in the games when he was a defensive replacement. McDonald was probably most remembered for his pitching appearance in an 18 inning game against the D-Backs when he pitched a scoreless third of an inning while striking out former Phils prospect, Tuffy Gosewich. This will be his fourth team this year.
Nefi Ogando, a right-handed relief pitcher, was 2-3 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while recording three saves for Hi-A Salem. He should prove to be nothing more than a roster fill-in at the minor league level.
With the trade of Michael Young as well, the Phillies will now be able to call up players such as Ceaser Hernandez and Freddy Galvis without hesitation.
