Today the Flyers cut a bunch of players, cutting their roster to 32 (really, 28). They need to be cut down to the 23 by the start of October 1st, the start of the NHL Season. These players all made the trip up to Lake Placid for the continuation of training camp starting today.
The remaining forwards (17):
There are some surprises such as the missing Tye McGinn who was expected to crack this Flyers roster, and Chris Vandevelde who is on an AHL contract, but has sparked enough interest to remain on an NHL tryout contract. In addition, it seems Scott Laughton will make the transition to LW and possibly play on the third line with Matt Read and Sean Couturier.
The remaining defenseman (11) are:
Hal Gill is still holding on even though there doesn’t seem to be a place for him to fit on the NHL roster, but you never know what Holmgren has up his sleeve. Marc-Andre Bourdon and Chris Pronger will start the season on injured reserve, freeing up additional cap space.
An interesting name missing is rookie Sam Morin, who played well in his two preseason games but has found himself headed back to juniors a bit earlier than expected.
The remaining goalies (3) are:
There are no surprises in this group. Ray Emery and Steve Mason are likely to be a tandem this season, unless one stands far out in performance than the other. Yann Danis will likely be sent down to play for the Phantoms by the start of the season.
