Flyers 3 Stars: Flyers Drop Season Opener To Maple Leafs 3-1

To the disappointment of Flyers Nation, the Flyers lost their season opener by a score 3-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs. If you could take one thing away from that it’s this: Jonathan Bernier is freaking good. However, you can’t say that Bernier stole the game, as the Flyers were 1/7 on the power-play.  Before everybody starts freaking out about the power-play, let me say this loud and clear (well write it, you know what I mean just go along with it): that was the first game. This was the first time both power-play units played together in live game action, and against a top-tier penalty kill (ranked 2nd in PK% last season). This game wasn’t all bad, however. Here are the 3 stars of tonights performance.

3rd Star: Vincent Lecavalier

Tonight, Flyers fans saw why Vinny Lecavalier was taken 1st overall back in 1998. Especially in the 1st period, Vinny showed great vision and creativity in the offensive zone, moving the puck elegantly. A great example is his assist on Brayden Schenn’s goal late in the first period. Vinny made a play out of a simple cycle by seeing the ice better than everyone else. He sw the weak spot in the defense and attacked it.

2nd Star: Mark Streit

Another big acquisition made a big impact tonight, registering 1 assist and 22:42 TOI.  Streit did exactly what he was brought here to do: move the puck. Streit started numerous rushes with either a crisp breakout pass or taking it himself. He also showed great poise and vision in the offensive-zone. Streit is exactly what this team needed last year: a stable defenseman in his own end who can start the breakout and create offense in the other end.

1st Star: Brayden Schenn

If you read the 3 stars last year, you know I am huge supporter of fighting. It keeps and the game honest and gives the stars room to operate. In the 1st period, Leafs’ forward Joffrey Lupul gave Claude Giroux a cheap cross-check. Schenn doesn’t want anybody messing with his captain so he took matters into his own hands.  Than after the fight, Schenn came right back out and buried a goal late in the 1st. That’s a great combination. Send a message that you can’t mess my captain and then right back and show them you can’t mess with me either.
