In another interesting move along his front line—the first being the demotion of winger Tye McGinn—Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has traded winger Max Talbot to the Colorado Avalanche for Steve Downie.
This move makes little sense for the Flyers; not only has Talbot’s defense been much-needed, and for that he’s even been used on the first line by Craig Berube, but a team that lacks energy just traded its most energetic player.
Downie, who played his first two seasons in the league with the Flyers, has a higher cap hit; he’s been playing well this season, with a goal and six assists, but still one wonders at not only the timing but the content of this trade for the Flyers. Then again, he is a free agent at the end of the season, so it may be a short-term plug for Homer and Co.
Still, what can a team that is scared to the shoot the puck going to do with another puck-passing winger?
