Flyers News: Steve Downie Out, Ray Emery In Net vs Rangers Tonight

Yes, this is happening.

Per several reports, including the Flyers’ Anthony SanFilippo, Steve Downie will be a healthy scratch tonight for the Philadelphia Flyers as they face the New York Rangers in a key Metropolitan Divions matchup. He will be replaced in the lineup by Jay Rosehill; this likely means Tye McGinn will be promoted to the 3rd line with Vinny Lecavalier and Sean Couturier, while Rosehill joins Chris VandeVelde and Adam Hall on the 4th line.  The first two lines (Raffl-Giroux-Voracek, Simmonds-Schenn-Hartnell) will probably remain the same.

Coach Berube is benching Downie for a “lack of intensity.” Yesterday he demoted Downie mid-game to the 4th line and them left him on the bench on a key power-play late in the game. This is clearly a “sending a message” move from Berube, but it seems an interesting time to do it against a division foe.

In addition, Ray Emery will be in net for the Flyers today after Steve Mason’s five-goal game yesterday against Tampa Bay. It was Mason’s worst game of the season, and despite my feeling that Coach Berube putting him back out there tonight would be best for his No.1 goalie’s psyche, Berube will go with the hot hand in Emery. In his last 3 appearances, Emery is 2-0 with a 1.33 GAA and a .968 save percentage. He has yet to face the Rangers this season.
