Phillies Bring Back Outfielder Bobby Abreu

He’s baaaaaaack!

39-year old outfielder Bobby Abreu agreed to a one-year, $800,000 minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies today, per CBS’ Jon Heyman. After showing interest in both Lyle Overbay and Vernon Wells, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has chosen to take a low-risk chance on a player who hasn’t seen an MLB field since 2012.

Abreu still stands as one of the best outfielders to ever don Phillies pinstripes, 3rd on the team’s all-time list in offensive WAR. He is also 8th in Phillies history in total bases (2491), 4th in doubles (398), 10th in RBIs (814), and 2nd in walks (947). He made it to two All-Star games as a Phillie, won a Gold Glove, and won a Silver Slugger award.

He joins Marlon Byrd, Domonic Brown, Ben Revere, and John Mayberry in the outfield.
