Philadelphia Union Sign Experienced Midfielder Maurice Edu

The Philadelphia Union have greatly improved their squad for this upcoming campaign by signing veteran midfielder Maurice Edu from the English Premier League side Stoke City FC. Edu will be loaned to the Union for one year, and the team has the option to purchase the twenty-seven year old midfielder once the loan expires. The exact terms of the deal were not announced, complying the MLS rule, but it is certain that Edu will be able to make an immediate impact.

One of the bright spots to signing Edu is that he brings his experience of playing on the global stage as well as in one of the most difficult soccer leagues in the world to a very young and inexperienced MLS side in the Philadelphia Union. Edu was a member of the United States’ Men’s National Team during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Not only was he a part of the team, but he was also a significant part of the core group of players that helped the United States to reach the Round of 16. Edu played in three of the four matches against very talented and strong opponents. Playing for both Rangers Football Club, in the Scottish League, and Stoke City have given Edu the opportunity to play against some of the best players in the world, and on the world’s biggest stages such as the UEFA Champions League. The Champions League is a collection of Europe’s most talented clubs all fighting to win and be proclaimed as, “The best soccer club in Europe.” Edu was even able to score a goal in a Champions League match, a rare achievement for an American player putting him in impressive company.

Edu is returning to the MLS after having been in Europe since 2008. Edu was drafted #1 overall in the MLS Super Draft and was named Rookie of the Year in 2007. Through all of his playing across Europe and his MLS experience, Edu will be able to provide younger midfielders on the team with experience and guidance hopefully making them into more dynamic players. Edu is one of the most talented and experienced players the Union have ever signed in their brief existence in Major League Soccer, and having him on the roster and on the playing field will positively impact the upcoming season.
